Trips & Tricks

💡 Tips & Tricks for Regionals Weekend
We asked our Regionals community to share their best tips and tricks — and you delivered. ❤️
Here’s what fellow competitors had to say.
🧳 Packing Like A Pro
-
Order a dry robe now so it’s in your car for the event. Look for Sherpa-lined options (search “swim robe” if needed).
-
Bring more layers than you think you’ll need — including a solid rain jacket.
-
Be prepared for extreme swings in temperature. One day could feel like summer, the next like winter.
-
Bring all the footwear:
-
Waterproof boots/shoes (for dew or rain)
-
Running shoes (a couple of pairs)
-
Sandals/comfy shoes (between runs)
-
LOTS of socks (wet feet are the worst!)
-
-
Better to have too much than not have what you need.
🐾 Supporting Your Dog
-
Let your dog rest between runs. The environment is stimulating and stressful.
-
If you think you’re overwhelmed, imagine how your dog feels.
-
Keep to your normal routine as much as possible.
-
Support your dog both on and off the course.
-
Dog's brain needs downtime — let them sleep.
-
Make sure you warm up too — not just your dog.
🧠 Mindset Matters
-
Set achievable goals and maybe one or two stretch goals.
-
Take each run as its own event. Run it. File it away.
-
Regionals is a marathon — don’t carry a mistake forward.
-
Celebrate your mistakes — they’re yours, not your dog’s.
-
Don’t track points during the weekend. Check your scribe sheet, then calculate after your final run.
-
When you’re out there running, it’s just you and your dog.
-
You’re not done until that very last run.
❤️ The Big Picture
-
Your dog’s agility career is short — embrace every moment.
-
Go for the experience and focus on the little wins.
-
It will feel different than a regular trial — that’s normal.
-
Get photos — years from now they’ll mean everything.
-
Enjoy the banquet, shop the vendors, hang out with friends.
-
Thank the hosts and volunteers.
-
No matter what, you go home with the best dog.
