The Joy Within The Win
The Joy Within The Win explores how things have changed, what we have learned about how dogs learn, how joy in our dogs is linked to their confidence and how our mindset and movement creates joy.
No one could have predicted the wild and amazing ways my life would change from just one decision, bringing a Border Collie pup home to join our family. The training journey began right away, with highs that still feel incredible just thinking about them, and lows that no one wants to go through ever.
We were a busy family, but we always made time for dog training. As a consulting dietitian, I worked with athletes and sport teams, and their busy schedules made mine that way too! My husband Tom travelled as a manager with Bell. The good thing was, we had flexible time, perfect for slipping out between kids and clients for dog training classes.
How incredibly lucky to live near some of the world’s best trainers!
I loved how the step-by-step methods dovetailed with Stages of Change research for my Masters in nutrition education. To say I was an avid student is an understatement. Once a week class became three times. Obedience led to Rally-O and Agility. I attended most every local trial, started instructing, helped clubs host, travelled to judge Rally, competed internationally in Agility.
Life changed again, and I was at a crossroads. I retired from nutrition into full-time dog agility coaching, where my heart was! I taught weekly classes and the wonderful Aim Hi community grew. Serving as Team Leader for Agility Team Canada for a decade, I was alongside Canada’s most talented teams at the largest and toughest Championship events. Not only was this a top honour, it was a time of incredible opportunity and deep growth.
Thirty years of full-tilt experience is a lot to draw on. Many things have changed along the way in training and competing with dogs. The most significant difference is our understanding of how dogs learn. How joy in our dogs is linked to their confidence, and how our mindset and movement creates the JOY. It is very rewarding to expand what we know about ourselves, and our dogs!
Currently Linda coaches handlers looking for specific skills and strategies that work to create the joy and confidence their unique team needs to achieve those sought-after and meaningful WINS!
